Energy
If we minimise our energy and transport needs, we will lower our greenhouse gas emissions. Towns need to be planned to minimise energy and enhance community growth. Businesses should become energy efficient, and we all should lower our transport needs. In Australia, household transport is around 30% of all emisions.
Groups or individuals may wish to add a comment (Just register first) about how we can conserve energy and therefore greenhouse gas emissions.
Examples may include eg. replace electric hot water with solar or heat pumps; obtain greenpower or buy solar photovoltaics (see CAN bulk buy offer); walking and cycling; car pool or hire; free public transport; free bicycles left around CBD for loan; living near trains and other public transport; better town planning to encourage working near home; work from home; encourage more bicyle-ways; higher density living along public transport routes; renovate using climate sensitive and passive building design principles; reduce reliance on lots of energy-hungry appliances; employing renewable energy; using low embodied energy materials; get retrained in jobs that have low emissions; join green teams at work to suggest energy conservation measures (paper recycle bins per desk, walk 2-3 flights of stairs etc.)

educating council about cyclists
Newcastle Council should get rid of the deadly "bike picture lanes" which are causing cars to squeeze too closely past cyclists.
Stop getting annoyed by cars:
Unsign-posted "bike picture lanes" are too narrow & Road Rules 153 & 247 advise not to ride in them. They are car-door-opening-death lanes. When passing parked cars, 30m beforehand, check for cars, then move into the next lane safely, away from door opening zone.

educating motorist about cyclists
v hanlon
Having lived 17 years in Holland and now one year in Newcastle I realize that motorists here are not used to cyclists nor are they part of their road awareness.
In Holland when you drive you must give way to cyclists.Cyclists are as much a part of the traffic as any vehicle .The roads there are very well equipped for bicycles with separate bike paths everywhere .
Not until special bike paths are built here will many more people take to the roads and go by bike.
Motorist need more educating and be more mindful of bikes. I don't feel as safe here as I do in Holland on my bike.
Newcastle is a great place for cycling with many flat areas.I used to do all my shopping on my bike in Holland which is great exercise and great saving on fuel.
I will offer to show a few councillors around Holland so they can see how bikes can be a great part of the community!
I rarely used the car in Holland as everything was so close and public transport was easier than parking which was prohibitively expensive!
I can see how my time living in Holland has changed my use of the car and how I still want to be close to everything so as I can walk or bike.
