Welcome

Welcome to the Transition Town Newcastle website. The Transition Town model is a global and now local grassroots phenomenon driven by the twin challenges of Climate Change and Peak Oil, but with a positive vision of a better and more satisfying life, as we navigate our energy descent.

We invite participation from all in our communities in moving towards a truly sustainable and resilient society - where a sustainable society is defined as one which satisfies the needs of the present generation without compromising the capacity of future generations to meet their needs, and a resilient society is one able to continue to function and develop in the face of challenges or shocks to the systems it relies on.

For an inspirational and very good introduction and overview of the Transition model, see the  Primer

Once you are familiar with what we are trying to do, you can also login and add your sustainability comments, or alternative opinions, especially in the "Many parts, one whole" section that has Energy, Food, Transport, Waste, Water, Economy/Growth/Jobs, Built Environment etc . Your local feedback will contribute to our Energy Descent Plan for each council area around greater Newcastle.

We believe that the rapidly expanding Transition movement is one vehicle that many have been waiting for, to support communities in the journey to a more sustainable and resilient future. We accept that we face a climate emergency and need to act together and to act now.

The Twin drivers of Transition Initiatives are Climate Change and Peak Oil, and together these provide an almost air-tight case for radical changes to the way we live. By building community awareness of the imperatives for action, and providing the space and encouragement for inspired and creative community contributions, we intend to develop Energy Descent Pathways that will be a blueprint for real and enjoyable connection, participation and action.

Having successfully had our first AGM (Feb. 2010), and a showing of the new movie In Transition 1.0, we are preparing for a series of events across the Newcastle LGA throughout 2010.
