The Refugee Action Network Newcastle (RANN) is a community group that campaigns for the rights of refugees in the local newcastle area and broadly. We meet on the first Tuesday of the month at the Hamilton Station Hotel 6-7:30pm.
We are supporters of the fundamental human right to seek asylum when fleeing persecution or torture. RANN focuses on raising awareness for refugee rights, engages in local level organising, distributes information, organises public meetings and speakers and creates educational forums, lobbies and organises demonstrations, rallies, marches and other actions. RANN works collaboratively with other organ isations to support their work on refugee issues.
Under the treaty regarding the treatment of refugees signed in 1951 by Australia, we have obligations to protect the human rights of all asylum seekers and refugees who arrive in Australia, regardless of how or where they arrive and whether they arrive with or without a visa.
