Filling the pondFilling the pond

It was designed by Permaculture Hunter with the special permaculture elements which reduce pests, improve soil fertility, boost plant growth and permit easy maintenance, and allow convenient harvesting of fruit and vegetables.

The pond will attract birds to help ward off grubs that attack plants, and with fish and frogs, the mosquito lavae should not survive.

The children had a great time helping supervised by their parents, and were a great help doing lots of jobs.

The garden was  sponsored with a $3,500 grant from Newcastle City Council won by the Multicultural Neighbourhood Centre. It was also sponsored by the "Sustaining our Suburbs" project of PHR, with funding from Uniting Care Ageing (Hunter, Central Coast and New England Region).

Local Business Support from:

  • Poppy's Nursery, Gateshead
  • Mitre 10, Toronto
  • Beveridge Mitre 10, Warners Bay
  • Sabaco-2nd Hand
  • Rathmines Butchery
  • Rearden Fencing
  • Hansbuilt Furniture
  • Climate Action Newcastle

Overall, everyone had a great time and the Multicultural Neighbourhood Centre received a garden with about 20 family plots.
