Food Blitzes 3 & 4

Beresfield Preschool: Before the BlitzBeresfield Preschool: Before the Blitz

On Sun 9/8/09, around 25 people learned Easy Food Growing at a workshop, and then spent a few hours in the Garden at the Beresfield Community Child Education Centre.

On Sun 16/8/09, 4 gardens belonging to locals were designed in the workshop in the morning, and the garden was finished by another 25 people.

The Preschool garden was sponsored by Newcastle City Council, Uniting Care Ageing (Hunter, Central Coast and New England), Permaculture Hunter and Transition Town Newcastle.

It was also supported by donations and discounts from:

  • Rainbow Sands
  • Heritage Gardens
  • Newcastle City Counil, Greening Centre
  • PGH Bricks
  • Parkers Thornton
  • Climate Action Newcastle
  • Mitre 10, Toronto
  • Sabaco-2nd Hand

Making the Brick BedMaking the Brick Bed

The brick bed was created during Blitz3, and filled with soil during Blitz 4.

Jack Thieme and Yvonne Nussbaumer gave workshops on Easy-Food-Growing techniques in the morning of each day, and in the 2 afternoons, we built the garden.

Laying newspapers to stop grassLaying newspapers to stop grass

We put down newspapers to stop the grass growing up thru the garden and path (its a no-dig, above ground, garden) .

The finished garden looked great and was very creative - it had a "Snail" herb spiral,  "Caterpillar" tyre planter, archway and Teepee for climbers, 3 veggie beds, a fruit orchard, a compost bin and worm farm.
