Sustainable House Day 2011
Sustainable House Day 2011
Sunday 11th September
Don't miss it!
The tenth annual Sustainable House Day in September this year will be a huge day.
Four houses will be open (the first three of which belong to Transition Newcastle members):
- 37 Fitzroy Rd, Lambton, 2299 (Cathy and Graeme Stuart) – Heather Stevens will be demonstrating cooking with a solar oven and the SunRocket solar kettle (see a slide show on their house here);
- 16 Thomas Coke Drive, Thornton, 2322 (Aaron Hodgson and Rebecca Tyndall) – Purple Pear Organics will be in attendance on the day and will be giving a talk on permaculture at 1.00
- 117 Ingall St, Mayfield, 2304 (John and Rosie Hays)
- 467 Majors Lane, Keinbah, 2320 (Lee Mears) - Off grid
Transition Newcastle has sponsored this event since 2008, showcasing environmentally sustainable homes to the public as more and more Novocastrians embrace renewable energy, recycling and other practices designed to lessen our impact on the environment. Last year around 800 people checked out the houses, talked to owners, shared tips and ideas.
Environmental awareness – or being ‘green’ – is great, but putting it into practice around your own home is the best contribution you can make to living in harmony with our planet.
Find out directly from home owners who’ve put sustainable living into practice, about reducing waste around your home, saving water, natural home heating and cooling and more.
Thanks to Bryan Havenhand for all his work in organising the houses.

If you can’t wait till September 11th you can interact with home-owners via the online community shmeco.com this is a great way of learning from others or sharing what you are doing.
