Welcome to Transition Newcastle. We're dedicated to creating a sustainable and resilient Newcastle, with the added bonus of making it an even nicer place to live and building community. Transition Newcastle is made up of passionate people volunteering their time and energy. We invite participation from all in our communities. In fact, for this to work, we need YOU!

Transition, sustainability and resilience...

Transition Newcastle is based on The Transition Town model, which is a global, grassroots phenomenon driven by the twin challenges of Climate Change and Peak Oil. Instead of focusing on what we don't want, the key to the Transition Town model is the focus of creating positive visions and projects to create a truly sustainable and resilient society - where a sustainable society is defined as one which satisfies the needs of the present generation without compromising the capacity of future generations to meet their needs, and a resilient society is one able to continue to function and develop in the face of challenges or shocks to the systems it relies on.

For an inspirational and very good introduction and overview of the Transition model, see the Primer and/or check out the In Transition 1.0 movie:

How can I get involved?!

The easiest way to get involved is to come along to one of our Open Space meetings. At these you can bring along your own ideas or issues and help others with theirs. It's an excellent opportunity to create projects and link up with others to make them happen. Click here to find out when the next one is.

You can also find other events focused on sustainability in the Sustainability Calendar.

If you are not yet on our email list you can subscribe on the left, and if you like you can contact us and we will send you our latest newsletter and other information.

Finally, you can fill out our survey to let us know the direction you'd like to see TN go in and let us know if and how you can help out.

About Us

in

Transition Newcastle is a grass-roots, non-profit organisation creating a positive vision for the future, where we can form close community ties, and network with the myriad of environmental organisations, and work with local Councils and businesses to accelerate the pace of change we must make, in order to effectively tackle the twin challenges of peak oil and climate change.

The global Transition movement has sprung from the work of Rob Hopkins, who is a Permaculture Teacher who became aware of the Peak Oil and Climate Change challenges. He motivated his school students in Kinsale, Ireland, to develop the first Energy Descent Plan for their region, and this has inspired hundreds of global communities to follow his approach. Here is a recent presentation from Rob.

Permaculture Hunter Region Inc is working closely with TTN while maintaining their identity and being very active in working on the ground with Community Gardens, Training Courses and Seminars.

Transition Town Newcastle Inc. invites fellow travellers to join us on this journey to more effectively spread the word and action on the necessary transition to a sustainable low-carbon, relocalised economy where possible, with a positive vision of more friendly, involved, socially equitable and supportive communities, within a safe environment and climate.

We have a committee with members who work and live around Newcastle, Lake Macquarie, Port Stephens, and we are gathering resources to assist local areas to start their own Transition Initiatives.
